You Know…

You know you are a mom when you have to ask the cashier to please remove an unwanted item from the receipt during self check-out lane because your toddler decides to ring up an item behind your back as you put what you rang up in the bag…

Said item was a second candy bar…  Naughty girl!  She already had her one choice of treat, not about to give her a second one…

Dinner Outing with Nana

Yesterday was a long day from work.  I come home after a text my mom sent that Haley was brought to Hubbs.  Okie dokie!  I turn around and head home.  We chatted for a bit before my mom decided to take us all out to dinner.  We proceeded to ask Haley if she wanted some noodle, that is, after we decided on a place.  Pei Wei!  Haley said YES to noodles!  Okay, off we go!

We arrived at Pei Wei and ordered what we wanted.  Haley got her Lo Mein which, according to mom, is her favorite thing!  We proceeded to wait for our food at the table after getting our drinks.  The drink machine is really different, like an all in one type of futuristic machine.  I sorta stumbled with it given it was only the 2nd time I came across that kind of machine (first time was at Five Guys Burger).  Haley was a pro at it.  I guess it’s a lot like our iPad.  Haha!

Our food arrived and we all dove into it.  It was fun.  Haley was the only one with a fork while the rest of us had chopsticks.  She sees this and snatched insisted to have Ian’s chopsticks.  Didn’t want to be the odd one out.  She did pretty good with the chopsticks despite struggling with it a bit.  She flipped it around and used the fat end of it.  With a bit of tips and help from all of us, she was able to get some noodles.  Haley says:  “See, you would just pick up your noodles, like so…”

She was actually pretty proud of this and goes to demonstrate Nana her new skills.  Then once dinner was over, she and I went to grab some fortune cookies and we all ate ‘em.  Then we had some photos taken.  But first, shall we show the photos?

She kept trying to tell Hubbs to look into one of the cameras.  Kinda hard when you have two ladies with the camera for pictures.  I think he was trying to look at me and Haley to Nana.  She wouldn’t have it!  Daddy, look over here, not over there…

Ah success!  What an adorable picture!  See the kitchen back there?  Haley was really fascinated with the action going on and watched while the adults talked.  I was called upon to usher take Haley to the bathroom.  We had a successful trip!  Yayy!  Yes, that means we are in progress of potty-training.  She’s been asking to go in public with no problem, so working on actually going at home.  That’s sorta the opposite for most kids, isn’t it?  Anyway, moving on…  Like I said, we had opened each of our own cookie, Haley gave Daddy his while my mom and I took ours.  We had an extra one for my mom to take to my dad since there were food left over for him.  Wanna know what Haley’s fortune was?  Take a look…

If you cannot see what it says.  I’ll help you.  It goes like this:  “You deserve to have a good time after a hard day at work or school.”  Hmm.  We certainly had a good time!  Hard day at two and half years old?  What possibly could be hard?  Well, she’s been working hard at her potty-training lately (we are also pinching down on that though to now, we’ve taken a more casual approach towards that).  Her teachers always tells me that she had a really good day and runs all the time.  She may be the youngest in her class but sure is the fastest kid in her class.   I’d call that hard work!

Of course, she couldn’t get over the white takeout box we packed what was left of her dinner.  Guess what she wanted for dinner when I asked?  You guessed it!  Her dinner from last night!  She was quite the charmer to some of the people who worked there and flashing them some cheesy grins.

Wordless Wednesday

Haley’s School Musings

So, the last week was pretty interesting for Haley at her school.  Usually, there may be some questions of the day or question of the week.  Sometimes Haley’s name would have a blank responses and I know they tried getting something out of her.  So, I had gone in one day and asked the teachers if they can encourage her to actually say the words rather than having her point or drag them over to what it was she wanted.  It was the same day I spoke with the school director and I suppose she understood my perspective to encourage a child that receives languages well but the expressive part still needs some work on it and put an analogy that they could understand.  Well, next day, I came in  the classroom to sign Haley out and have her help me collect her stuff.  We turned to leave and saw that she had something filled next to her name.  Couldn’t it be?!  A response!

Some of the questions of the week involved:

Favorite Animal?  Dog

Favorite Fruit?  Orange

Favorite Song?  3 Little Monkeys

Interesting!  Granted, we have two little dogs so I imagine it was the first thing that came to mind.  Then there’s the fruit, she’s been on an orange kick lately.  Finally, the song, I’m pretty sure I have an idea how the song goes, but I do know the school do some signing with songs too.  In her One Year room, she loved the Apple Tree song, seems that it’s evolved to the 3 Little Monkey.

Then there’s the promised pictures as of late.  She has become so independent lately and tries to do most things herself.  Sometimes she needs a bit help.  She even went as far as to feeding Nana her own dinner!  That was pretty hilarious.

Here, she is playing a bit of dressing up, mostly with all the bags we had in her room.  Some of them used to be my purse, some of them were made, and some were sent home with her from a party we went to.  She found some necklaces that I somehow still had all these years.  Not quite for daily wear, but fun types of necklaces.  I think she had a blast putting them on and such.  She even picked up the play kitchen phone to chat.

Sometimes Haley and I take a trip to our library to get her some books.  The one day we went, we were pretty early so I decided to take her over to a nearby park which was just over the hill.  As soon as we got there, she practically had no interest in the park whatsoever.  Hmm, oddly, usually she’s all bent over.  Then I see what she was looking at and explains why she had no interest.  See, she is really into birds these days and even makes a point to stop and point out the birds for me.  While driving, she would point them out, while shopping and spying a bird, she’d point it out, or even on the way from the car to her classroom.  So we walked over to the nearby lake and saw all kinds of birds (at the least to her).  There were ducks, geese, pigeons, and some bunch of assorted birds.  I’m pretty sure they all thought we had came to feed them.  We had nothing with us.  I was pretty nervous since she got awfully close to the edge so I asked if she wanted to sit and watch.  I love the picture I took!  Totally reminds me of the times my mom would take us out to the park.  Good times.

And finally, I totally think she loves to snuggle up with a cozy blanket.  Just like mama.  I love doing this while watching TV, reading a book, hanging out.  If there’s no blanket nearby, you could probably find me resting my hands on top of a pillow or something.  This was one Saturday morning and Haley woke up asking for the mini pancakes and wanted to watch Mr. Bean (yes, the funny guy).  She even asked for my blanket that I made to be stuffed up around her.  So I did that.  Usually her pancakes would have whipped cream or that sort, but this time was plain.  I quite didn’t want to mess up my blanket that I’ve only JUST finished making.

So, there you have it.  Haley’s latest musing at her school along with few bonuses thrown in.  People at work always stop by my office to ask how she is, usually they’d refer her as the baby.  She’s not so much of a baby these days, but she’ll always be my baby.  It’s amazing how much she can do these days and have a mind of her own.

Croup II

Long time no see!  Hmm, somebody has been slacking off lately…  Guilty as charged…  Maybe because the holidays are coming up and having had my time consumed by the little lady and family members.  I’ve been slowly plotting out my latest project (which is in the cutting stages right now, yayy!).  It’s my new Cosmo Bag from Amy Butler.  It will be a modified version with outside kangaroo pockets for extra stash.  So I’m looking forward to that.  Onto the post itself…

The past week was a chaos with my work schedule and school schedule, that’s too complicated to go into.  After all those are set aside, she was home with me since Tuesday as well as the festive of Thanksgiving holiday, which we got to celebrate twice!  Good thing I’ve been working just about daily since the beginning of September.  I think I just about cancelled out all those gym times with the two Thanksgiving dinners.

Haley was her usual self, running around the house, playing hard with her toys, same old.  Saturday, Hubbs went off to weld with his dad on his latest project with his beer making process.  So we stayed home instead and tried to play as hard with her possible so she could have a good nap for me to start cutting on the fabric for the project I mentioned.  I would either tidy up during her nap times, read, rest, or even do a bit of project.  Usually it’s so hard to predict what kind of nap she’ll have.  I’ve had as short as 30 minutes to as long as 3 hours.  Wouldn’t it be so nice for Haley to give me an idea so I can plan for her nap hours?  Oh well!

After her nap, she had her usual snack with whatever she was asking for.  Just around this time was when Hubbs came home that he pointed out Haley felt hot than her usual temperature.  I didn’t notice right off but seemed to be there ever so slightly.  So we kept an eye on her.  She started coughing and coughing, restless, and even got up soon after we put her down for the night.  You know when your kiddo wakes up from what seemed to be a nightmare?  She came out of the room looking like that.  Poor girl. Her coughs continued and we started to get concerned when it became apparent of her having difficulty breathing.

I took this cue in starting to look at an urgent care center that was open that late of a time, which was around midnight/1am.  With Hubbs gone most of the day, she just wanted daddy, which was fine with me so I could look around.  I did find something the last time we nearly went to urgent care but decided to wait it out to go see her doctor since the office nearly opened.  I kept that information, and turns out it was really useful this time around.  I had no luck in finding anything open this late in the night.

It was well worth the drive, given it was the only place open that was close to us.  There was practically no waiting time other than filling out the form.  The nurse brought us to have Haley’s vitals to be taken before taking us to our assigned room to be seen by a doctor.  We learned that Haley is barely pushing 25 pounds.  I had her sit at the weighing table and saw the number come up as 24 pounds 4 oz.  Tiny thing!  Shouldn’t come as a surprise since she still has most 18 mos-24 mos clothing.  She has few 2T sizes but doesn’t wear them often, but still!

The doctor came and talked with us about her symptoms and all signs pointed to croup.  As soon as she said that, I was relieved to have this confirmed since it was my first immediate thought.  The doctor even heard her cough just as she came back with information sheet about the croup, even though we had it last time around.  “Yep, that’s definitely croup, poor girl.”  This time around, we had taken her earlier than before.  Haley got her medications to treat the croup and we were on our way home.

So…  1 year 11 months 3 weeks and 3 days, she came down with croup #2.  She’s usually the last of her classmates to come down with anything or being sick.  If any, she has been pretty healthy.  I would think so with all the fruits she loves to eat.  The good news, the little lady is doing well now that she’s had her meds and shot.  I wonder what her 2nd year will bring us.  I can’t believe she’ll be 2 soon!  I feel like sometimes I have to pinch myself to see if it’s really happening.

You Know…

I have another “You Know…” to share…

You know you are a mom (who is also trying to cram in some gym time during her day) when you find little surprises in your (gym) bag like this…

I found this when I was unpacking my gym bag (which is temporary and hope to have one made for myself as a project) and seeing this totally caught me off guard and made me smile.  Haley must have sneaked her pacifier in the bag before we left for the day.  In fact, I was just thinking before seeing this how I did really well this week also with exception of Monday that I forgot my bag.  I’m so proud of myself for doing pretty well since I first began 2 weeks ago.

She said it!

She said it!  She really did!  At 21 months ladies and gentlemen, Haley has said daddy AND mama!  Both of them!  On the same day!

This brought tears to my eyes and I think my heart burst in joy when I saw her say those very words in sign language.  I waited for so long to hear her say this.  I’ve been so patience when she started picking up on different words.

We were on our way to meet a friend for dinner but needed to stop by and get Hubb’s box that was supposed to be shipped to us, but we weren’t home.  He parked and I stayed in the car with Haley.  She got upset that daddy was walking away.  I told her that daddy would be right back, he was picking up a box.  She turned back to see where he went and signed daddy.  What?!  I think my eyes turned ever so big to see if I saw it right and even straining not to blink at all.  I asked her again, who she saw.  Daddy.

Yes!  Daddy!  Then he came back.  I explained to him what happened.  He turned to Haley and asked who I was and signed mama (on the nose) and gah.  I could just squeeze her!  We probably bounced back and forth pointing who was who and watching her sign.  I think we sat there for a good few minutes before we were on our way.

21 months later of having Haley, I finally get my “mama” and Hubbs his “daddy”.

You Know…

You know you are a mom when…

You wake up in the middle of the night realizing you have no sheets over you and find that your daughter stole them all and tangled up in it.  You then proceed to take HER blanky and sleep with it instead.

That was me the other night.

New Classroom - Success!

Haley’s new classroom was a success!  She adjusted pretty good from what I’ve seen so far.  Majority of the children in that room are from the 1-year old room so she is comfortable.  Her teachers also moved with the classroom, which we are happy with.  That means they know Haley’s sign and what they mean.  We met with her new classroom lead teacher and she is a nice lady.  I’ve been working with her on the signs that the other teachers learned so far.

This week, apparently the classroom theme is jungle animals.  She saw her favorite animal, the giraffe and was the first thing she reached for at the table where it was set.  Other animals included gorillas, monkeys, rhinos, hippos, and bunch of other toys I didn’t get a chance to identify what they were.

They even told me she’s tried the potty few times though it’s not very consistent, I don’t think she’s FULLY interested yet but at the least she shows interest.  I know there’s a bunch of potty books out there, this time, I feel she should lead her potty training.  Even with this, it came with a new sign, “paper” for when she’s done.  I’m really amazed how well she does with pulling down her shorts (sometimes with a little help).

Over the weekend, we went to the library which makes it trip #2.  This time, the experience for me went better.  I learned if I wanted books, I should try and look them up in advance and put them on hold for me.  That way I just get them, browse with Haley and check out when we’re ready.  After the library, we headed over to visit Nana and Aunt Barbara (who happened to have a sleepover at my mom’s).  That trip turned out to be an impromptu trip to GGma’s (or Gramma’s).  We all had fun!  I think Haley especially enjoyed her lunch which was grilled cheese and fruit cup.  There were choices like fries, mac and cheese, and few other things.  Knowing she loves her fruits, I got her that and it came with blueberries!  She killed those off first before she worked on other fruits.  She loves that next to strawberries.

Not only that, she and I went swimming for the first time!  Well not her first time, but my first time ever to be able to take her.  She does so well.  I should probably get her some puddle jumper or something.  I think she was more thrilled to be able to wear her water shoes.  She loves them.  Or even to be able to use our spray-on sunscreen.  She really loves that too.

Haley Starts School…

Haley’s first day of school in her new classroom is tomorrow.  ::cue tears::

When did she grow up so quickly?  It wasn’t too long ago when we brought her to her new school earlier this year.  Since she started halfway through the school year, she fit right in.  She was a fast learner to their routines.  Tomorrow, her classroom will move to another room.  It feels like her first school day all over again.  I was telling Hubbs that I’m planning on taking her picture before she leaves.  Last time around, it was right outside her gate and she had such short hair back then, and a lot shorter.  I remember cradling her in a football hold while I had my other hand free to get myself something to drink.  Now she’s probably 2/3 the size of me, I’m just guesstimating.  But still…

Then this woman from my mama online board (which, by the way are an awesome group of ladies I am honored to have “known” and met, without them, I probably wouldn’t be sane given I don’t have a lot of IRL mama friends locally), talked about some lyrics she found.  Boy oh boy, it had me blubbering.  It’s a good thing I don’t wear eyeliner anymore or no mascara that day.   It’s inevitable children grow up, moments are easy to pass by, priorities are always shaken and they seem to reorganize itself to what matters the most to you.

Never Grow Up - Taylor Swift

Your little hands wrapped around my finger

And it’s so quiet in the world tonight

Your little eyelids flutter ’cause you’re dreaming

So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light

To you, everything’s funny

You got nothing to regret

I’d give all I have, honey

If you could stay like that

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

I won’t let nobody hurt you

Won’t let no one break your heart

No, no one will desert you

Just try to never grow up, never grow up

You’re in the car on the way to the movies

And you’re mortified your mom’s dropping you off

At 14, there’s just so much you can’t do

And you can’t wait to move out someday and call your own shots

But don’t make her drop you off around the block

Remember that she’s getting older, too

And don’t lose the way that you dance around

In your PJs getting ready for school

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

No one’s ever burned you

Nothing’s ever left you scarred

And even though you want to

Just try to never grow up

Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room

Memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home

Remember the footsteps, remember the words said

And all your little brother’s favorite songs

I just realized everything I have

Is someday gonna be gone

So here I am in my new apartment

In a big city, they just dropped me off

It’s so much colder than I thought it would be

So I tuck myself in and turn my night light on

Wish I’d never grown up

I wish I’d never grown up

Oh, I don’t wanna grow up, wish I’d never grown up

Could still be little

Oh, I don’t wanna grow up, wish I’d never grown up

It could still be simple

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

Just stay this little

Oh, darling, don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up

It could stay this simple

Won’t let nobody hurt you

Won’t let no one break your heart

And even through to you want to

Please try to never grow up

Don’t you ever grow up

(Never grow up)

Just never grow up
